Monday September 6th is Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.  In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.  Cleveland was also concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.  All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.  Pictured at right is a photo of a Labor Day parade on Main St. in Buffalo NY in 1900.

Continued Support for Governor Brewer

Jan_brewer_signing_SB_1070_042310PLEA supports Governor Brewer and her fight for the State and her commitment to the rule of law.  It seems it would be easier for the federal government to do their job of securing (not sealing) the border instead of bending over backwards in ignoring their clear responsibilities to the citizens of Arizona and front line law enforcement.  When the actions coming from DC are inefficient and insulting, dangerous results for ground-zero communities are soon to follow.  Would the response from DC be different if the southern border could be seen from the steps of Congress?

Harold Hurtt - Wrong Guy Right Job

harold-hurttFormer Phoenix Police Chief Harold Hurtt has taken his sanctuary city policy from Phoenix to Houston, leaving in its wake dead and injured police officers and devastated communities.  Hurtt's former track record leads one to wonder if the intent of his appointment to one of the top positions within ICE is to intentionally put a damper on immigration enforcement and to discourage local law enforcement entities from partnering with ICE.   Read the Fox National News story and documents provided to Fox News by PLEA.

Shameful

fop stands with chiefs against immigration policy revisionOn October 8, 2007 Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris reported in an ENS about a press conference attended by his Valley management peers and their police fraternity (photo of FOP at the event).  Harris also defended his broken and dangerous “sanctuary” policy in the same Employee Notification System (ENS) video.

This policy required that an illegal alien commit another crime and create another victim prior to officers contacting and partnering with ICE.  While Chief Harris and his fraternity brothers were willing to accept the chaos created from the federal government’s failure at the border, PLEA pursued a new immigration policy - a proactive policy that allowed officers to have a discretionary phone call to ICE when a person they contacted was connected to a crime and there was reasonable suspicion to believe the person was in the country illegally.  The change to the Phoenix immigration policy occurred in March 2008.

Mayor Gordon: SB1057 or SB1070?

SB1070_Confusion

Mayor Gordon and SB1057 SB1070

It appears that Mayor Gordon’s lack of confidence in Phoenix Police Officers along with a struggle to understand the similarities between Phoenix Police Department policy and SB1070 continues.  Just as alarming, it seems Mayor Gordon was unaware of the successful two-year test drive of SB1070 under the revised immigration policy as presented by Chief Harris.

Over the past two years, the current Phoenix immigration policy mirrors the basic intent of SB1070 – if an officer has reasonable suspicion to believe a person is in the country illegally, and that person is connected with a crime, discretionary contact can be made with ICE for verification and disposition.  Victims and witnesses, as in the current immigration policy, are NOT the focus of SB1070.  Booking, as in the current immigration policy, is NOT required under SB1070 – a person can be dropped off at ICE.
