Monday September 6th is Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.  In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.  Cleveland was also concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.  All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.  Pictured at right is a photo of a Labor Day parade on Main St. in Buffalo NY in 1900.

Interim Count Atty pursues dangerous path

Rick_RomleyOn Friday May 21, 2010, several local, state, county, and federal officials from the law enforcement community met to communicate concerns to the public with regard to recent statements made by interim County Attorney Rick Romley.  Mr Romley recently facilitated the release of several suspects who were in custody for violating the states human smuggling statute, a felony offense.  In recent stetements made to the media Romley said he would no longer pursue charges against illegal immigrants as co-conspurators and added that his office would no longer participate in "raiding" businesses under immigration law.  Translation: Free pass to those who violate the employer sanctions law.

The courts have validated that the prosecutorial methods used by former County Attorney Andrew Thomas were sufficient to meet the legal constraints required to successfully prosecute Arizona immigration statutes.  Falling crime rates in Maricopa County and Phoenix support the continued implementation of the proactive illegal immigration policing strategies of Sheriff Joe Arpaio.  Overwhelming support of Arizona citizens in regards to illegal immigration for SB1070 indicates the priority for the rule of law over political agendas.  Rank-and-file officers on the ground have proven that addressing both ends of a criminal enterprise, be it users or suppliers, cultivates an atmosphere of deterrence.

Rule 15 Questionaire

surveyThe department recently sent out Rule 15 Questionaire/survey forms that officers were directed to fill out and return. Several officers have raised concerns and called PLEA with questions.  The department has assured PLEA that since officers are being compelled to complete the survey that Garrity protections apply.  They have also made it clear that the purpose of the survey is NOT to gather information for the purpose of investigating officers.  If there are further questions regarding this please call the PLEA office @ 602-246-7869.

E.J. Montini understands what Phoenix Police Officers already know. The main premises of SB 1070 won't change a thing for Phoenix Police Officers. Phoenix Officers have been contacting ICE and deporting illegal aliens for the last two years.
