Monday September 6th is Labor Day

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.  In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.  Cleveland was also concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair.  All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.  Pictured at right is a photo of a Labor Day parade on Main St. in Buffalo NY in 1900.

Flip Flopping the Numbers

Double_talk_4The Phoenix PD seems to be quite adept at talking out of both sides of it's mouth.  When they want money from the U.S. Congress, kidnappings are in the 350 range.  When they want to fight SB1070 – just one month ago, July 4, 2010 to be exact - Public Information Officer, Sgt. Tommy Thompson spins a different story.

CLICK HERE to read a BBC News article from April 2009 where Sgt. Thompson speaks of the number of kidnappings and talks about "two distinct types of kidnappings" yet in news video below he essentially states that all kidnappings are the same.

The televised interview done with ABC News 15 on August 19, 2010 shows the department ducking and weaving once again as PIO Sgt. Tommy Thompson says that any notion of inflated kidnap numbers is wrong when he states; "That is incorrect (responding to assertions of inflated kidnap numbers) we have given these numbers and we have been very open about it."  Sgt. Thompson then goes on to say; "We follow the criteria established in title 13, if it's a kidnapping it's a kidnapping."

Why SB 1070 and Border Security are Important

abdullah_al-nafisiOn February 2, 2009, Kuwaiti Professor Abdallah Al-Nafisi addressed a gathering in Bahrain.  His remarks were broadcast by Al Jazeera TV out of Qatar.  The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) captured the video and posted it on their website with a translation of the professors comments.  In his remarks, Professor Nafisi advocates the smuggling of anthrax into the US via the US/Mexico border to be used in an attack on the White House.  He also advocates and prays for the future success of an attack on a nuclear power plant in Michigan.  Videos and commentary such as this make the strongest case for the control of illegal immigration and securing the southen border of the US.

Rush Limbaugh Interviews Brewer on SB 1070

rush-limbaughConservative talk radio commentator Rush Limbaugh publishes a monthly newsletter known as the Limbaugh Letter that is mailed out to subscribers worldwide. One of the trademarks of the Limbaugh Letter is a one on one interview between Rush and a prominent political figure.   In the August 2010 edition of the Limbaugh Letter, Rush interviews Arizona Governor Jan Brewer on SB 1070.  Included in the article are photos of the signing of SB 1070 with PLEA and numerous other APA assciations from around Arizona in attendance.  Perhaps what is more telling is who isn't in the photos.

SB 1070 Applies to Canadians Too

Canadians_DeportedRecent protests in Phoenix related to the court battle over SB 1070 drew protests with many of the persons involved being bussed in from out of state.  Two protestors took it upon themselves to hang a banner from a construction crane located in the downtown area which required the closure of several streets and tied up more than 70 law enforcement personnel for over two hours.

After the two subjects were arrested and booked, MCSO jail personnel discovered that one of the subjects was in the country illegally from Canada.  It's possible that a Canadian has the unique distinction of being the first person deported under the provisions of SB 1070.

PLEA Comments on SB 1070 Ruling

judge_susan_boltonMany in the media are focused on what Judge Bolton "paused" from taking effect in SB1070.  This "half-empty" perspective can cause many to miss what the judge left in and what is allowed to take place.  Phoenix Police Officers have test-driven the main principle of SB1070 for the past two years.  In the past, officers could make a discretionary phone call to ICE when a person contacted was believed to be in the country illegal (reasonable suspicion) AND that person was connected to a crime.  This will continue under the new law.
